Reseach Networking Programmes

Research Networking Programmes (RNPs) lay the foundation for nationally funded research groups to address major scientific and research infrastructure issues, in order to advance the frontiers of existing science.  These long-term programmes, subject to selection through an open call and an international peer review process, must deal with high-quality science and demonstrate the added value of being carried out at the European level.

2010 Call for Proposals postponed

The Call for Research Networking Programmes (RNP), originally scheduled for 1 July, has been postponed. This decision was taken in the context of the current discussions between ESF and EUROHORCS (European Heads of Research Councils) about the ways in which their relationship could be better developed to serve European science.
The timing of the review of the RNP proposals, and the negotiations with ESF Member Organisations to obtain the necessary funding, is such that there is a two year gap between launching a call for RNP proposals and starting the Programmes. The RNPs resulting from this call would therefore not start before 2012, when the new organisation resulting from the current discussions should already be active.
The way to proceed with the Call for RNPs will be decided when there is more clarity. It depends largely on the outcome of further discussions regarding the future mission and activities of the new organisation.
This decision has no bearing on the call for contributions from Member Organisations for the proposals from the 2009 RNP Call. This will continue as planned, as the existing call represents a commitment to the research community that we will honour.

EUROCORES (Themes)

EUROCORES Themes are "bottom-up" proposals for the creation of new collaborative research programmes dealing with broad and complex topics which are best addressed through multinational cooperation. Through its annual call for theme proposals, ESF solicits new ideas from the scientific community with a view to creating large-scale European Collaborative Research (EUROCORES) programmes in and across all scientific domains.

Call for EUROCORES Themes 2010

The ESF received 49 proposals in response to the 2010 EUROCORES Call for Themes by the deadline of 21 May 2010. The scientific distribution of the proposals is the following: 15 interdisciplinary proposals, 9 themes in Life, Earth and Environmental Sciences, 17 themes in Physical and Engineering Sciences, 5 themes in Social Sciences, 9 themes in Medical Sciences and 9 themes in the Humanities.

Research Conferences

The ESF Research Conferences Scheme provides the opportunity for leading scientists and young researchers to meet for discussions on the most recent developments in their fields of research. It acts as a catalyst for creating new synergistic contacts throughout Europe and the rest of the world.

It develops principally through the establishment of long-term partnerships between the ESF and national and international organisations, including universities. Each partnership funds a series of conferences which focuses on the same topical area and takes place at a recurring venue. Individual conference topics are either selected by ESF and its partners, taking into account their strategic interests, or are generated through an open call for proposals announced at the beginning of each year.

Exploratory Workshops

Each year, ESF supports approximately 50 Exploratory Workshops across all scientific domains. These small, interactive group sessions are aimed at opening up new directions in research to explore new fields with a potential impact on developments in science. The workshops, which usually last 1-3 days, have a wide participation from across Europe and involve mature scientists as well as young, independent researchers and scholars with leadership potential. The relatively small scale (in terms of people involved) provides an ideal platform for focus on the topic and for all participants to contribute to discussions and plan follow-up collaborative work.  Interdisciplinary topics are greatly encouraged.

EUROCORES (European Collaborative Research Projects)

The EUROCORES Scheme enshrines ESF's goals of enhancing synergy at a pan-European level by providing a framework to bring together national research funding organisations and supporting interdisciplinary research in non-traditional areas, thereby opening new horizons in science.

Foversees the process of selecting EUROCORES programmes from start-to-finish, including an international peer review panel, a ranking process and research dissemination activities. EUROCORES programmes are broad and complex in nature, with topics selected through an open call for themes. Uniquely, EUROCORES networking activities bring together researchers who will eventually conduct their research at the bench together.

In 2009, the nine following EUROCORES Theme proposals were selected for further developement into EUROCORES programmes: EuroSafeART, EuroEPINOMICS, EuroUnderstanding, EuroCYNAT, EuroBioSAS, EuroGICA, EuroVOL, EuroTRACES, EuroSolarFuels.

The ESF is currently in the process of securing the financial commitments from the interested Funding Organisations for these nine programmes. The deadline for establishing the required level of financial commitments to enable the launch of the programme (i.e. funding commitments for at least 30 Individual Projects) is 10 December 2009.
