Home, Migration and the City:New Narratives, New Methodologies This conference takes ‘narratives’ – broadly defined as stories, diaries, myths, photographs, music, films, media images and representations of movement – as the analytical starting point for new research on migration. Narratives have several dimensions. Firstly, migrant narratives need to be understood as inherently spatial. Secondly, this spatiality of migration narratives is multi-scalar; it can relate to belonging on a national, political scale, represent locality dynamics, more small-scale, personal experiences of migration, or even the material narratives of migration, such as stories of significant objects and material culture.

B Cells and Protection: Back to BasicsMicrobes populated the earth long before any eukariotic cell. Therefore, in order to survive, mono and multi-cellular organisms had to develop mechanisms of adaptation, cohabitation and defense against bacteria, fungi and viruses. One of these mechanisms is mediated by immunoglobulins in the serum and at mucosal surfaces. B cells and their antibodies, both natural and adaptive, play a fundamental role in the immediate and late defence against microbes and in the control of the commensal microflora.

Europe's biobanks need urgent coordination, scientists say Leading European scientists say that there is an urgent need for greater coordination and harmonisation between Europe's biobanks repositories of genetic and other information from large numbers of people that can be used to investigate complex diseases such as cancer and Alzheimer's. To enable this, there should also be closer coordination amongst funding agencies and between regulatory authorities, as well as increased and sustained funding for biobanks. This will optimise the development of a harmonised legal and ethical framework for their operation, researchers say.

Pharmacogenetics and Pharmacogenomics: Adverse Drug Reactions Adverse drug reactions are a major problem for healthcare services, the pharmaceutical industry and regulators. This has been highlighted recently with some high-profile drug withdrawals and regulatory decisions. There is an urgent need to develop strategies to reduce the burden of adverse drug reaction this needs to apply to both drug development (to reduce the rate of attrition) and during clinical use (to reduce patient morbidity, mortality, costs to healthcare, and drug withdrawals).

Paving the way for future pan-European Clinical Trials Pan-European collaboration is important for many clinical trials and essential for trials that are investigating treatments for rare diseases. For many rare conditions, there are insufficient numbers of patients in any single country to allow meaningful clinical trials to seek better treatments. To overcome this problem the ESF programme called Pan-European Clinical Trials (ECT) has seen the successful launch of two trials into rare bone conditions, osteosarcoma and fibrous dysplasia.

Probing Interactions between Nanoparticles/Biomaterials and Biological Systems Alternative Approaches to Bio- and Nano-Safety In this conference we seek to discuss the consequences of protein-adsorption on a surface in a manner that is appropriate for future study by physical, biological and medical sciences, and particularly as a paradigm on which to base the emerging field of Nanotoxicology, as here the amount of surface available to interact with proteins and cells is enormous.

2007 Call for ESF Research Networking Programmes proposals ESF Research Networking Programmes are networking activities bringing together nationally funded research activities for four to five years, to address major scientific issues or science-driven topics of research infrastructure at the European level with the aim of advancing the frontiers of science.

ESF-FWF SYMPOSIUM (in partnership with LFUI) on WATER INTERFACES IN PHYSICS, CHEMISTRY AND BIOLOGY: A multi-disciplinary approach The main objective of this conference is to develop a multi-disciplinary presentation and discussion that focuses on the properties of water (and ice) in proximity to different types of interface. Interfacial water/ice covers a wide range of subject areas and is an emerging field of topical interest. The participating scientists will be drawn from areas of physics, chemistry and biosciences where water plays a significant role in the behaviour of the local and intermediate range order, characteristic of the assembly.

ESF-EMBO Symposium - Three Dimensional Sensory and Motor Space: Perceptual Consequences of Motor Action The aim of this conference is to bring together experienced and young researchers from various disciplines (psychology, biology, neuroscience, physics) that are interested in the perceptual consequences of motor action. Time will be alloted to poster presentations (to be selected from abstracts). The conference will be held on 6-11 October 2007, in Hotel Eden Roc, Sant Feliu de Guixols, Spain.

ESF Mathematics Conferences in Poland in partnership with MSHE and The Institute of Mathematics (PAN) - Control, Constraints and Quanta The aim of the conference is to exchange ideas developed and being developed in three fields: geometric nonlinear control theory, geometrical mechanics, and geometry of quantum systems. The three topics use similar tools from differential geometry and may offer to each other new methods and ideas.

Assessment for basic research needs fine tuning, policy experts say Assessing the impact of basic science in terms of economic returns can be a futile and self-defeating exercise, according to economist Wolfgang Polt of the Joanneum Research Institute (Vienna).

ESF-LiU Conference - PATHWAYS OF HUMAN DIGNITY: FROM CULTURAL TRADITIONS TO A NEW PARADIGM Pathways to Human Dignity is the final conference in a series of workshops, organized by the European Science Foundation and the University of Linkping, the International Union of Academies, the UNESCO, the International Social Science Council, the International Council for Philosophy and Humanistic Studies, the Institute for Catalan Studies and the Netherlands Research School for Practical Philosophy. The conference aims to bring together the various perspectives on and debates over human dignity and to identify, from the perspectives of different disciplines, what further research is needed.

Public Goods, Public Projects, Externalities (PGPPE) Research Networking Programme Launched last year, and chaired by Professor Monique Florenzano of the University of Paris 1, Pantheon-Sorbonne, PGPPE is looking at how to advance economic theory in the areas of public goods and services, which influence policy decisions surrounding certain essential questions. The outcome of the Programme will be the creation and development of a research network mixing theorists, specialists from the fields of political economy and the history of economic analysis, as well as practitioners of public economics. See the webpage for more information, or download the Programme brochure.

Globalizing Europe Economic History Network (GLOBALEURONET) Research Networking Programme Professor Stefano Battilossi, from the Universidad Carlos in III Madrid, gave an update on progress within this Programme at the recent SCSS Plenary meeting. Strategic initiatives include new comparative economic history, Europe-wide data bases, aims to enhance a generational takeover and promote excellence through an integrated training of post-graduate students. To address these, GLOBALEURONET has identified Priority Areas and set up Organising Teams, Methodological Workshops and Research Seminars, plus a series of Exchange visit grants. Alongside the ESF webpage, GLOBALEURONET also has a separate website where you can check out activities and opportunities and subscribe to a newsletter.

EUROSCIENCE OPEN FORUM 2008 (ESOF2008) The EuroScience Open Forum is an interdisciplinary, dynamic and innovative European event that the ESF has been involved in since it was created in 2004. The third in the series ESOF2008 - will take place in Barcelona in 18-22 July 2008.

Electronic Democracy: Achievements and Challenges Conference The conference will be chaired by Professor Herbert Kubicek, from the University of Bremen (Germany) and sets out to assess the state-of-the-art of social science research on Electronic Democracy (eDemocracy) and to identify theoretical and methodological challenges for the future research agenda.

ESF-EMBO Symposium - Biomagnetism and Magnetic Biosystems based on Molecular Recognition Processes Sessions will focus on: Challenges in Bioassays; Biomagnetism I; Biomagnetism II; Medically Adapted Magnetic Materials; Microfluidics & Biosensor Arrays; Magnetic Biosensors & Biological Applications; Magnetic Devices for High Throughput Clinical Diagnostics; Biomagnetic Devices for Gene Sequencing; Commercial Exploitation. 22-27 September 2007, Hotel Eden Roc, Sant Feliu de Guixols, Spain
